Amit Roy
has been President and Chief Executive
Officer of IFDC since 1992. IFDC's
goal is to increase agricultural
productivity through the development and
transfer of sustainable, effective and
environmentally-sound plant nutrient
technology and agribusiness expertise to
developing countries.
Dr. Roy
joined IFDC in 1978 as a Chemical Engineer.
In 1990 he was named Division Director, then
Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
Under Dr. Roy's leadership, IFDC expanded
its mission to address not only food
security but also trade, equity and
environmental issues. He expanded
IFDC's operational mandate from fertilizer
to total agribusiness systems in the context
of economic development. Dr. Roy's
wide-ranging projects include research and
development of new or modified fertilizer
materials and processes applicable to
indigenous fertilizer raw materials,
especially phosphate rock. He helped
create fertilizer industries in many
developing countries and provided technical
assistance in fertilizer technology,
processes, and production-related
environmental problems.
In June
2006, Dr. Roy played a key role in
organizing and implementing the Africa
Fertilizer Summit, held in Abuja, Nigeria,
under the Chairmanship of President Obasanjo
of Nigeria. The Summit was conveyed by
the African Union's New Partnership of
Africa's Development (NEPAD).
Dr. Roy's
work has taken him to over 120 countries.
He has published extensively, and delivered
invited papers and keynote addresses in
several international events and meetings.
He has also given expert testimony before
the U.S. Congress Subcommittee on Hunger,
has been featured and interviewed in
numerous international publications, and has
appeared on television programs in several
developed and developing countries,
including CNN.
Dr. Roy has
a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from
the Indian Institute of Technology and his
Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from the
Georgia Institute of Technology. |
